An old medical tool is changing rapidly. Ultrasound has gone far beyond people's habits, and doctors at the University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center say it is saving lives and reducing costs.
David Stromberg is just a doctor who uses new ultrasound technology from the convenience of the examination room. Old fixed ultrasound equipment does not allow doctors to do this.
“I do think there are a lot of techniques that keep us away from patients. It's a technology that brings us closer to patients,” says Stromberg.
Today, ultrasound machines are smaller and more portable, providing doctors with the images they dream of.
“So, using ultrasound to look at the lungs, historically, we thought it was not feasible. Then we found that we could see a lot of different things looking at the lungs, we didn’t even realize that we could even see it 10 years ago. "Stronberg said.
In rural health, this is changing the game.
“From the patient's point of view, you talk to the patient about a problem and let us say that there are clots on their legs. They are worried about this. Historically, you will take that person to the hospital for ultrasound. But now We have this new tool, and we can do it there," Stromberg said.
There are many benefits to patients, especially in terms of cost. In some cases, he said that a simple scan would not cost the patient.
“If you have a specific problem with people entering the clinic, we can diagnose at the clinic without having to send them a CT scan, but in addition to sending them to the hospital, we have reduced their costs quite high, and we have lowered the system. The cost," Stromberg said.
Moving on, Stromberg says it can really change the way doctors practice medicine.
